Thornless Roses
Since we have demolished the trellis we have freed up a space that has ben neglected - it is an extension of the present rose bed and leads to the veggie garden. The girls have asked if they can have that part of the garden - they want to make a "fairy garden" with fairy friendly plants and that has to include roses that don't have thorns ( in case the fairies wings get torn). The log wall will be covered when we erect the sandstone wall that is under construction now and I've started digging out a few scruffy shrubs in the bed, leaving in a Salvia, some succulents ( rock roses) seaside daisies, tulips pelargoniums and some bearded irises, otherwise the bed will be cleared of shrubby stuff ready for some low plants that kids can handle and of course, the roses without prickles! So, do any of you flower experts have any idea if there is a thornless rose? Here's a pic of the area, a mess from the last two days demolition work but the lawn is actually quite a nice grass. The top two logs will come off when we do the wall, so it will be shorter.

A truly thornless rose is the bourbon Zepherine Drouhin - I can recommend it for its wonderful fragrance. The foliage is scented also and the kids can have fun smelling a crushed leaf. It wafts. It's a climber but easy to train and won't eat your fence or anything. Had it growing on my verandah once - never saw a single thorn or prickle on it.
There's also the polyantha Pinkie which you can grow as a cascading shrub - positively floriferous.
YOu'd have to ask about their suitability for your climate though.
