Rose cutting

I am wondering what I should do with a small rose cutting that has a bud on it. Surely it would not support a flower? Do I take it off?

Betty is there foliage as well ? Has the cutting made roots?

There are 3 or 4 cuttings in the pot, Fran, with the bud being on the smallest one. Roots are starting to come out the bottom, so should I re-pot them separately?

Ah I see it - wouldn't worry Betty - I often leave the first bud to get a positive ID - sometimes I forget what rose I took cuttings from LOL

Yes pot them up - wouldn't put them in full sun for awhile. I keep them in light shade and surround them with other plants for company - pots stay cooler and get watered together - no one gets missed

It's Mary Rose, Fran, and it, and all the other potted cuttings are living beneath my nectarine tree which is just coming into leaf. I can give them better shade beside the lucerne tree if you think it necessary. It does get pretty darn hot here.

Matter of degrees I suppose Betty. If you know they'll be watered I'd leave there if it's convenient for you. They'll tell you if they're getting stressed anyway. Heat up here can be a killer so I take extra precautions.

I can take a photo but it will only be a tiny rose, Fran. I re-potted those 4 and 3 Pat Austin's, and one of the latter, the smallest one, still hasn't got roots. I don't know yet how yours will fare, Cheryl, I am not disturbing them to check.

Wow - they look healthy Betty! I can see that bud. If it were me I would let it open, then snip it off short and pop it in a little vase, so the plant doesn't have to spend any more energy on it. I just couldn't resist having the flower.
I wish I could grow roses from cuttings. When is the best time to try? Like as if I would have more places to plant them? Actually if I prepared a big bed in the new block next door, for next winter, I could mass plant it with only a few varieties of the same colour, if I could do them from cuttings. Probably DA's.

Okies - too late now then. They are burned! I thought you took cuttings in early Autumn? I have tried cutting before and was a total failure. I will need someone to talk me through the whole process - LOL

Jan, I haven't even got roses that are big enough to prune, so you'll have to get your answers from those here who know all about cuttings. LOL. All I did was dip them in hormone powder and some went into the ground, others into Richgro Pro mix potting mix, and it's the latter cuttings that are doing the best. Last night Ian suggested I take up all the cuttings from the trenches and pot them. First get a truckload of potting mix, hey?
