How late can I plant peas?
I'm in the central highlands district in Victoria. How late can I put in peas? Probably greenfeast. I love peas - raw, cooked, eaten frozen from the fridge like iced lollies - LOL.

Greenfeast July to December in Southern Victoria. William Massey/Melbourne Market can go in now (May-August) if you can get the seeds. New Gippsland Seed Farm probably have them.

Re: How late can I plant peas?
I'm growing Onward peas, they come in a bit earlier than Greenfeast or others, so I stagger the planting over three months, that gives us enough to freeze - we just finished the last lot out of the freezer and the first crop is starting to reach upwards! They were planted last month, another lot going in in a couple more weeks. Love to pick them and eat them before they get to the house! Interestingly, Peter Cundall hasn't put any in that I could see this weekend.

I picked my first pods today, all water logged and where green inside, the outer shell was almost see thru, of the casing I mean too wet and too cold maybe

Gotta weed them though. That bloody dead nettle is a pain. We're off to Hobart Saturday for a week so that won;t get done too soon.

bigger weeds are easier to pull out

I agree Thee. There is nothing more annoying than heaps and heaps of tiny weeds coming up. Sometimes i just plonk pads of straw on them to smother them. There will be a lot of that happening this year.
My peas, planted about 2 weeks ago, haven't shown through yet. Is that normal?

planted at a depth of about 25 mm they should emerge after about 10 - 14 days. Trick is to plant into damp soil and not water them (unless it rain). They shouldn't be far away.
Re: How late can I plant peas?
Sounds OK then. I watered them in lightly, and left them too it. We have had rain in that time, but not enough to rot them. I'll cross my fingers for this weekend. Have too much to do to be bothered worrying about a few pea seeds. if they don't come up I'll bung a few more in. There weren't new seeds, so maybe a bit too old to germinate.

Slugs are my problem with peas, especially with old seed as they're so slow growing.

Helps to soak the seed overnight, pouring hot water over them.
Bill made some smoke water for native seeds, and I want to try that on some older seed.

Jan, my peas and broad beans are taking forever to come up but when I dug around in a couple of spots looking for the broad beans, they are on the way. Still..... tempted to fill the gaps in the peas. I hate having gaps. LOL.
