I grow it too - mine is the cultivar "Alice du Pont" - they make a wonderful show on a trellis don't they.

The one I have here survived a long trip from my old home and then another move from one pot to another. I used to have 3 different cultivars - a white as well as a double pink. Alice proved the hardier of the three when it came to drought. The mealybugs are attracted to it here though. I just pick them off by hand but sometimes the ladybirds will come gobble them up. It likes to be grown organically - I only use organic fertilizers and it flowers freely all year long. Doesn't mind a prune either and this will prevent it getting too leggy. Mine needs one now actually.

The dipladenias are a sport with glossy leaves - they don't make as much height either. The foliage on mandevillas is more coarse - sandpapery if you like.

Alice du Pont is a gem - can recommend to it anyone. Is that the cultivar you're growing Durgan?

Yes, Mine is Alice du Pont. We grow one every year. They don't over-winter. Sometimes we take it indoors but due to space requirements we usually buy one each year. The plant is never without flowers.

I just bought two of these looking a bit worse for wear ..but they were reduced to a few dollars......I gather they go better in pots ..but I have planted mine in pool yard...should be protected from frosts and that garden doesn't get alot of water...so am I being optimistic...

Tilly, if it got nipped by frost I daresay it would shoot up again but might depend on how severe. I've never grown it in the ground. They can get quite large in a big pot and make a wonderful show on a sunny trellis - they lap up the heat but like lots of organics round them and do have to be kept watered although it's not a do or die thing. Or that's my experience.

The evenings are getting cool, bu this pretty plant is still blooming. It will soon be prudent to bring it indoors for the Winter.
