Has anyone grown Fenugreek in cooler climate zones? We love this spice and I'd like to try using the leaves too. I can't source seeds ( have just put in my Eden order) but I figure if I plant some of the spice shop ones, they might grow.

It's a lovely pungent, slightly sweet (not hot) spice when you use the seeds. Really good for people who have asthma or chest colds. We use it in curries and Chinese dishes and I make a five spice mix for Moroccan dishes, along with cinnamon, cloves, cumin and star anise. ( I add others stuff too) . A friend of mine has a daughter with Cystic Fibrosis and makes her a Fenugreek tea. It's one of those spices that make your kitchen smell like you are a gourmet cook! Not used as often as it should be I reckon. I think the Lebanese use it a lot in their style of cooking. Try it!

I haven't grown it before, but plan to do so this season. I will try the seeds from the spice shop. There are some other things I will take out of spice packets this season and try to grow. We shall see how that goes.

I was wanting to grow some this year too. Can't you get seed for sprouting? That would do to grow in the garden. Try the health food shops.

I've got a jar of seeds that I got from Spice World where I get my spices. I'm interested to see if they will indeed grow or if they have been de-natured in some way. I'll plant some when I get back by which time Gnome's should be growing like steam trains! I'd also love some recipes using the leaves.

Right - I'm going to put some to see if they sprout - brain is not in gear....if they sprout them they should grow........

I grow it regularly as a winter green manure/cover crop as it germinates and grows throughout most of our winter. It also means I have another tasty green to use in soups and stews. The flavour is the same as the seeds though it's much milder but you wouldn't think so as you harvest it. The last lot I sowed didn't survive a week of very hard frosts: -°9C ambient which means around -14°C on the ground, poor plants. I'll be putting in more shortly, but only for greens.
I buy my seed by the kilogram from a health food store. When I'm in Sydney I visit a particular Indian spice shop and buy a 5kg bag of seed. The car reeks of fenugreek by the time I get back to Armidale. It's fantastic!
