Garlic, shallots and onion seed
I missed the March planting dates for garlic because I didn't have a bed ready. I still don't but will have by the end of the week. I'm hoping April will still work as a garlic planting time. Please say it's okay!
I also want to plant shallots (not scallions!) and sow some onion seeds. Have I left my run too late?

I am in the same boat.... was waiting for the rain to get some moisture in the soil before I planted my garlic out.

You might be OK with onions if you plant sets not seed. Garlic should be OK though. I'm going to put an extra load in when I've weeded a bed. It really depends on the temperature - if the soil is getting cold, onions won't do too well. I planted carrots last week and of course it's poured with rain which is good, but I think I'll be planting more as they have probably been washed away. Same thing can happen with onion seed. Leeks will do better.

Sets usually go out in May here. Maybe I could sow my seed and keep it in a warm spot, like against the northwest facing brick wall until they're big enough to plant out. Failing that of course I'll just buy sets from the local nursery next month. I think shallots can be planted out like garlic so I'll put them in at the same time.

If you could get some onion seedlings might be worth a go. I didn't put any overwintering ones in this year - usually I do so in February/March, but last year's came to nothing. Tell you what -I'll stick a few seeds in a punnet in the hothouse and we can see how we both fare because our climates are similar although I think you get more frost.
