Contaminated Manure

I read some interesting info about weed killer residue in farm manure affecting the plants of home gardeners. I get my manure from an organic farm but one year bought the dried variety and had a lot of problems with the leaves of tomatoes curling up, much like those in the photo of this article: http://www.rhs.org.uk/news/Weedkiller-manure.asp

It bears thinking about when we get failed crops.

It's a free for all isn't it - everyone is messing around with chemicals and no one has a clue. We need a license to get married but we don't need one to mess up the environment - go figure...Fran

I think the weedkiller concerned is Imidacloprid. Used by vegetable growers in this country and listed here as being a potential ground contaminant - http://urlPass.com/3n3b

There are 64 different pesticides used by the vegetable industry in Victoria - it's mind boggling - I don't even want to think about it.

Can't remember if I mentioned this but tomato growers in Q'ld spray their crops from the moment they're planted out until just before harvest with 3 fungicides and 3 pesticides 3 times a week. And that's just tomatoes. There are other veggies that have a much heavier spray regime.
I'll stick with what i can grow myself!

Broccolli, and other greens, according to one of my daughter's ex's has to be sprayed 8 times with pesticides and fungicides. He refused to grow it for that reason. One year he grew peas and didn't spray according to McC***'s requirements so they condemned the crop. I got a lot of peas straw that year! I will certainly be careful where I get my manure from in future. I got calf pen litter last year but the supplier has gone into the ex category so I probably won't get any this year. But I am suspicious of the dehydrated stuff after reading this. Good site!

wish you lived closer blossom as nothing gets put in or on our paddocks ,well only what the cows do naturally
I am very very careful with any sprays ,but the paddocks get absolutely no sprays of any kind

we have far to much manure for our own use so would love to share it around
