Sicilian and Belgiums!

Here's another cauliflower/broccoli that I grow regularly. These are just the right size for two of us.



And can you believe it, I have finally grown some Brussels - they just never knobbed up before, but I think this cold is doing them good. I will probably never grow them again as they are not my favourite veg. Mind you, Mr Cosmic loves them with parmesan cheese, so he will enjoy this stalk - there are 10 other stalks coming on - bugger.

Well grown. Brussels aren't my favourites either, but straight from the garden is a different kettle of fish.

Mr GG loves Brussel Sprouts and I can take them or leave them, but no one else in the family likes them so I don't try to grow them, just buy a few occasionally.

What cauli is that Blossom?

all looks good but cant handle brussell sprouts in anyway ,just grose

Ray it's Sicilian Violet. The previous year it grew like this then over a couple of days turned fully violet. I get new seeds every year from Kings, but they are out of stock at present. Hopefully in time for autumn planting next year.

Thanks Blossom. I haven't had much luck with caulies, apart from Romanesco. I think I'll have to sow each month until I find the right time for them here. I've got seeds for a yellow/orange one that I'm keen to try.

Romanesco and all the Italian types grow well for me but those that grow low to the ground like Paleface get mangles by slugs and snails that seem to like to lay their eggs or whatever, poo, in the cauli - so I stick with the Italian types that grow on stalks and are less susceptible. They never let me down and I actually prefer the taste, especially for cauliflower soup which is excellent and flavoursome. I tried some miniature cauliflowers this year but they too ended up with little black speckles of substance that I prefer not to know the name of! I plant in Autumn because they is little change of aphids/moths at this time of the year and the rabbits can't reach them!
