Free Rice - a game
I came across this awhile back and wondered why it made me feel uncomfortable. I can imagine it would be a great game to play in the classroom - one way to encourage kids to learn vocabulary - can't see anything wrong with that - would also raise awareness about world poverty and hunger.
But it seems a very contrived way to feed the hungry - a competition to win rice to feed people. What do you think?

You're incorrigible Thee - now you've made me feel guilty that I didn't take time out to play - will go back and see how much rice I can donate today

Re: Free Rice - a game
Well done! I do Free Rice while Bob is watching The Bill. I did a challenge with my SIL and Daughter - the Doctor of Education and beat them both hands down! We fed half of Africa that night, they refuse to play now.
Re: Free Rice - a game
I had a game fo it for 1/2 hour or so. Fun, and made lots of rice.
OK - who gets to pay for it? If they can afford to pay for it, why don't they just buy lots of food for the starving without improving our vocabulary. Why should the Africans starve just because whe don't know the meaning of all the hard words?
Something very suss there. I wonder if it is connected up to "click fraud"?
Click fraud is when people like google pay computer users to just click repeatedly on ads, to make money for google.
We have sprung a few scams in our advertising with Google and been succesfull in getting refunds from Google when it has been proven to be click fraud.
The people who do it? You probably know people who spend time online each day clicking on ads, and making money? They probably think it's OK, because it's just big companies and they can afford the advertising. wrong! It's little companies too. Little companies trying to make a go of it in a big company controlled world. Advertising online costs big dollars, and you don't want to be paying for someone to click on your ads for no reason.
Anyway - I think the word game is suss. I've done my rant. I won't play it again. I'd rather contribute towards feeding Africa the normal way. Oxfam, Tear Australia, Red Cross, Save the Children, etc.
Cheers, Jan

Exactly what I was thinking Jan - I can't connect the dots either - thought it was just me for awhile.
