Jujube anyone?
Is anyone growing this fruit tree? It sounds quite interesting.

Ray, this site has good info
http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/jujube.html
and I'm pretty sure Phoenix Seeds has/had them listed. I've always thought we were too cold to grow them, so that might be a problem for you too?
Let's know if you find out otherwise.
Cheers, Penny.

Re: Jujube anyone?
Ray you'll find it on that Indian site I posted the other day I think - they add it to pickles and sometimes eat it fresh with spices and salt - I've lost the particular link where I read that sorry.
Tree is thorny I think? - there are different varieties least two - one with a green berry and the other red ? - not sure.
This is the site I posted before anyway and there is some more info.

I've never heard of it! Sounds interesting. I'm off to Snug at the weekend for Liam's 2nd birthday party. I might call round at Phoenix and see if they have them.
Re: Jujube anyone?
Penny, do you mean summers too cool for good fruit production?
Armidale winters shouldn't be a problem, even at -15°C, as the jujube is hardy down to -30°C or so. However, sometimes the summers can be cool, like the one just gone where temps barely made it to 25°C. But that's not every year, thankfully. Our midsummer temps are often in the low 30s which I'm hoping will be hot enough.
And Blossom, please stop putting references up to that blog. Every time I go there I end up spending hours trawling through recipes!

Re: Jujube anyone?
Found some more info and thought I'd better post to correct what I said in my first post. Seems there are way more than 2 cultivars. Also the red and green berries I referred to are simply the ripe and green fruit
People in India eat the unripe fruit with salt so suppose it tastes like a salty apple Can make liqueur from it too.
This is more helpful -

Re: Jujube anyone?
Just glanced back and noticed that the culprit was Fran, not Blossom! Oh well, I've given in and now book marked it and have already copied a few recipes from it.
And thanks for the info on the jujube Penny and Fran.

Ray, I take that back about Phoenix. The catalogues I've found, not the latest thought cause I can't find that, don't list Jujube. So I can't remember where I've seen them listed. A touch of Old Timers'.
