Chook Resort to Let!
Finished the chook house, waiting on the chooks. We have made it moveable and it wheels around the garden easily. For the first couple of weeks the chooks will have the run of the berry patch. We'll put the temporary fence up tomorrow, then install the tenants, which look like being donated by Charmaine.

Oh how egg-citing for you Blossom
Lurv my chookies and they are such great layers and manure workers and food eaters....oh I could go on about them.

My daughter has too many chooks at the child care centre, so we'll probably inherit some from there. When we had the farm I had Light Sussex, and RI Reds - lovely breeds, but we'll just see what turns up.

Well have fun with your feathered kids....... hope to see photos of them too.....hint hint....
Re: Chook Resort to Let!
Chooks arrived late yesterday. Rosemary, Saffron, Nigella and Little Dill. They are a bit soggy at the moment with the rain all morning, will take photos when it clears up. But they have given us 3 eggs on their first morning, so are paying for their keep already.
Re: Chook Resort to Let!
Absolutely love their names. Especially Little Dill. any story behind that name?
How are they settling in? Good luck with them.

Carmen named them. Rosemary is apparently a person who has a TV show called Rosemary and Thyme and is bossy. The big brown chook is the mother of the other three so is bossy. Saffron, is a very light brown so Saffron suits her. She's also an escape artist a bit like Saffy from Ab Fab, trying to get away from the flock. Nigella's name came off a jar of seeds in the pantry, when Carmen was looking for a girl's name in spices and Dill is smaller than the rest, she tried 8 time to get into the box until she discovered the ramp! She then went and sat in the nesting box most of the day so we decided she really is a 'little dill' which is what I call the girls sometimes. So one way or another they ended up herbs and spices. We got a bit of sun this afternoon so they dried out their feathers and look a lot happier.
Re: Chook Resort to Let!
Ah, thanks. Carmen did a great job naming those chooks.
We'll be getting new chooks soon, too. The current lot are nearly retired and there are only 6 left of the 12 we rescued from the battery farm after our Tassie trip. Our neighbours will get a batch of little chicks and feed them up in the brooder. When they are old enough we'll get 12 from him.

Three every day so far - we had some poached for brekkie with Bob's home made organic wholemeal toast. No free lunch but a pretty cheap brekkie. I've put some pics on my blog.

Dunno, I'll have to watch which one go in to lay. I suspect it might be big momma Rosemary taking a break. Or Little Dill.
