Homemade Pet Foods
My Lucky Dog's Dinner
Thanks for this topic thread thingy...I had some recipes to post and didn't quite know where to put them!
Lucky Dog's Food
2 cups of uncooked Rice (wholemeal is best but white is OK)
1 500g pack Kangaroo Mince, or any cheap meat/mince this is cheap up here as they process it in a local town. I don't like the 'pet mince' you can get from the butcher coz it smells but if you can find a good source get it.
Boil up the rice and cook the meat with a bit of garlic added.
I then add grated vegetables from the garden, zucchini, carrot, pumpkin whatever's around. I add quite a bit almost equal to the rice. My Lucky Dog is old now, younger ones might need more protein. These grated vegetables are added while the rice is hot to partially cook them. It's good to add some green veg too if you have plenty.
Add Hard boiled eggs the number depends on how well the girls are laying, but up to about six. These are chopped up and added with the now cooked meat.
I cover the pot and allow it to cool slowly and thicken up. Then I divide it into small bags for the freezer and it makes up about 10 meals.
To serve: Thaw, then I add 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil, 2 Tablespoons of homemade Yoghurt, a little crushed garlic depending on how much was used to cook the meat, and a tablespoon of a Flaxseed supplement I buy (but it lasts a long time) and she gets a Doggie vitamin tablet on a reasonably regular basis.
I've tried other mixes over the years including raw meat ones but this seems most agreeable all round.
Lucky Dog (no relation to the Lucky1 on here ) loves this mixture and she slurps up every bit and licks the bowl for ages after.
This mix is used in conjunction with dry dog food (for crunch). It makes the bought in food last longer and saves us buying so much!

Re: Homemade Pet Foods
Lucky Dog's Garlic Biscuits
260g Wholemeal Plain Flour
115g Cornmeal (Polenta)
100g Sesame Seeds
3 Eggs (save one to glaze)
60ml Milk
125ml Chicken stock (home made is best)
2 Tablespoons Olive oil
2 Cloves Garlic minced
Mix together the dry ingredients with the wet (use only 2 eggs)
Leave 15 mins
Roll out to 6mm and cut to shapes (or not just cut in squares)
Place on lightly greased tray and brush with remaining egg.
Bake at 180C for 25/35 mins or until golden
Let cool.
These are used as treats and Lucky Dog says they are yummy!
I have more recipes if folks are interested although I haven't tried them all. I even have some Cat Cookie recipes but I'm yet to try them out...my Black Ninja is a bit fussy!

Re: Homemade Pet Foods
I made some of the dog food for Dougal and he loved it. Mind you he is the most food motivated critter next to Bob that I know of. I just have to keep his weight off so I'll see how he goes on rice. THanks - the biscuits sound good for people eating!
Re: Homemade Pet Foods
Might make some too - thanks for the recipe. The only thing I wouldn't have in the pantry at the moment is polenta. Have two hungry border collies here. What breed of dog is your Lucky, Scarecrow.
Did you know bought pet mince with preservative might cause thiamine deficiency - and this causes blindness amongst other things - don't know the details but mince is off the menu here.

I just can't stand the smell of it
LuckyDog is a Golden Kelpie Cross (with something???). We rescued her from the Animal Welfare League 14 years ago so she's getting quite old now!
